MMJPay was founded in 2014, during a period when the legal cannabis industry was emerging state by state and the payment infrastructure around it was virtually nonexistent. Banks were closing cannabis accounts without warning. Processors were either refusing the industry outright or setting traps — high reserves, hidden fees, and merchant accounts that disappeared without explanation.

Our founders didn't read about this problem. They lived it. As owners and operators of cannabis manufacturing and distribution companies, they experienced the instability, the cash dependency, and the operational friction that comes with running a cannabis business in a payment system that wasn't built for it.

So they built one that was. MMJPay was designed from the inside out — by people who understand what a dispensary actually needs, what a delivery operator actually faces, and what a CBD brand actually goes through trying to find stable processing. That perspective has guided every decision we've made in the ten-plus years since.

2014 — Founded

MMJPay launches in Kansas City, MO

Founded by cannabis operators who had experienced payment instability firsthand. The mission from day one: build a payments infrastructure that cannabis merchants can actually rely on — with banks and processors who are openly and knowingly committed to the space.

2015–2017 — Early Growth

Building the network as states legalize

As recreational legalization spreads to Colorado, Washington, Oregon, and Alaska, MMJPay expands its network of cannabis-committed financial partners. The cashless ATM solution becomes the primary processing product for retail dispensaries, providing a reliable alternative to cash-only operations.

2018 — Farm Bill

Hemp and CBD processing added to our portfolio

Following the 2018 Farm Bill's federal legalization of hemp-derived CBD, MMJPay extends its processing infrastructure to serve the emerging CBD retail and ecommerce market — bringing the same commitment to stability and transparency that cannabis merchants had come to expect.

2020 — Delivery Expansion

Mobile payment solutions for the delivery boom

As pandemic conditions accelerate cannabis delivery adoption across the country, MMJPay launches its 4G mobile terminal solution — enabling delivery drivers and curbside pickup operations to accept electronic payments at the door, removing cash from the equation entirely.

2024–Present — Scale

500+ active dispensaries across 35+ states

Today MMJPay processes for over 527 active dispensaries, delivery services, and CBD brands in more than 35 legal states — with over $500 million in total transaction volume processed. The mission hasn't changed. The infrastructure has grown considerably.
